September 2023 Issue 30

Storm Water Project

We are happy to report that phases 2 & 3 of this project have reached their respective conclusions. Final ancillary works were carried out and the road build up concluded in affected roads such as Triq Giovanni Felice, Triq l-Intornjatur, Triq il-Birrerija & part of Triq il-Haddiema by the application of the Surface Asphalt Layer in Mid-September. Every possible measure was taken by the CBDF to mitigate the adverse effects of the works on the impacted operators. One critical mitigating measure was carrying out the majority of these works during the night so as to cause the least possible disruption to stakeholders of the CBD.

Remaining works such as refreshing of Road Markings, Signage and other Traffic Management related works shall be carried out in the 1st week of October 2023.

Directional Signage

One can note that finally, new signage is being installed in a number of junctions leading to the Central Business District. To date only the Central Business District emblem was featuring in road signage but after discussions with Infrastructure Malta, it was agreed that the existing signage will be gradually changed to feature the name of the District in full. This represents another milestone in the CBDF’s achievements and has been long awaited by our members.

2075 Permits

Since 2nd May 2022, temporary permits for works to be done within the CBD started to be issued online by the CBDF on behalf of the B’Kara and Qormi Local Councils. We are pleased to inform that the transition process was a very smooth one. It is interesting to note that two thousand and seventy-five permits Permits were issued during this period, an average of 125 permits per month. Since the officials of the CBDF have visibility over the entire footprint of the Central Business District, this has resulted in less traffic congestion as permits are granted in a way, as much as possible, to allow the unobstructed flow of traffic in the vicinity. Without doubt, this has also resulted in more efficiency for the operators who have established a good working rapport with the Foundation’s officials who issue the permits.
